Fire protection
The Wellington Fire Department provides fire protection, medical first response, and emergency services to the Wellington Fire District, which generally encompasses the area from Union Corner to St. Chrysostome to Grand River, including all communities in between. The district serves approximately 1,257 residences, cottages, and businesses. The Wellington Fire Department is also a member of the West Prince Mutual Aid Association, a coalition of all fire departments west of Summerside. This mutual aid network was established to facilitate resource sharing during major incidents, such as the Evangeline Rink fire.
The department’s fleet includes a heavy-duty rescue truck for transporting firefighters and equipment, two pumper trucks—each equipped with Waterous pumps capable of delivering 1,250 gallons per minute and carrying 1,000 gallons of water—and two tanker trucks with capacities of 3,200 and 3,400 gallons, respectively. Additionally, the fleet includes a pickup truck configured as a Fast Rescue vehicle for rapid response, and a forest fire truck housed on behalf of the province. The primary coverage area extends from Portage to Borden.
There are currently 30 active volunteer firefighters and 4 junior members. Under the leadership of Fire Chief Leon Perry, the department collectively contributed over 5,500 volunteer hours to meetings, training, fundraising efforts, public fire safety education, and emergency response.
